Research Scholars

Ramakrishna Bhargav joined the Department of Communication as a full time research scholar in 2010. He has an M.A degree in Communication and an M.Phil  (School of Social Sciences), both from the University of Hyderabad. His M.Phil thesis, Cyberabad: An Interpretive Study of Eenadu Newspaper: 1995-2004, concerns an attempt to understand concepts/lived realities like Regional Mediatisation of Space, and Narratives/media spectacles of Development from an interdisciplinary approach. As part of the study, he presented a paper – “Cyberabad: Rhetoric as Social Space” – at a national conference held in Osmania University, Hyderabad. His journalistic/professional experience includes reporting and editing in the bureau of education, features, and politics with The New Indian Express  for three years including occasional contributions to reputed magazines. His doctoral research in the department strives to understand the role of stringers (local news correspondents) in Telugu Language newspapers from a ‘field theory’ method in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Stringers arenewsworkers who generate content at the local level apart from pushing circulation for newspaper(s) they work for apart from procuring advertisements at the local/district/mandal/village level. As part of this work, Bhargav presented a paper “Situating the Journalist: Blue Collar or White Collar?” at the 20th AMIC Annual International Conference held in Hyderabad in 2011. His other areas of research interest include communication and caste/region, continental communication theories, and sociology of fonts and print designs w.r.t India.

Jasmine Yimchunger joined the Department in 2008. She has a Master’s degree in Communication from the University of Hyderabad. She has been active in the media industry as a News Reporter for NETV, Guwahati for a year and was a Producer with CBN, Hyderabad for a similar duration. Her research work in the department centres around Television and Youth Culture in the north-eastern state of Nagaland. Her other areas of academic interest include audience studies, cultural studies and new media.

Chamila Jayashantha, from Sri Lanka, possesses an M.A. degree in Communication from the University of Kelaniya and his thesis was on the contribution of regional broadcasting services in agricultural development. He received his National Diploma in Teaching from Shree Pada National College of Education (Sri Lanka). Later he earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Economic Development from the University of Colombo. He is extensively experienced in development sector and for the last ten years he has worked and engaged with government, international and local non-government organizations in Sri Lanka as a trainer, project officer, area coordinator, project manager, consultant and evaluator in the fields of, agricultural development, community governance microfinance promotion and media relations. Chamila is also an external lecturer of the University of Colombo and University of Kelaniya. He has represented in more than ten national and international conferences with his work and has contributed to several international journals. He is a freelance journalist and published author in Sri Lanka, two novels are among his recent publications.  Chamila has also produced five short video documentaries on various issues related to community development. His doctoral research is on Policy, Practice and Evaluation of Information and Communication Technology for Development in Sri Lanka. His other research interests remain communication and media, rural governance and community development.

Machunwangliu Kamei did her Graduation and Masters in Mass Communication from the North-Eastern Hill University and Madurai Kamaraj University respectively, and also has a Master’s Diploma in Visual Communication from Asian Academy of Film & TV, and is certified as ‘Expert of New Learning Technology’ by Tele-akademie - University of Applied Sciences Furtwangen, Germany. She was teaching in the Department of Media Technologies, St. Anthony’s College and the English and Foreign Languages University, Shillong. She has also worked as Producer and script writer for Television programs; served as resource person and committee member for several Media Education programs. She has Tutored Asian participants in eLearning Development and Implementation course and eSkills Asia under GiZ, German International Cooperation and University of the Philippines Open University. Her areas of research interest are Technologies for Education (T4E), Information Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D), Semiotics of Visual Communication & Cultural studies.

Nookaraju Bendukurthi joined the Department of Communication as a full time research scholar in 2010. He has a Master’s degree in Communication from the University of Hyderabad and has over four years of experience in research, program implementation and documentation in the NGO sector and two yearsteaching experience in the discipline of Mass Communication. His expertise is in tapping opportunities to initiate new projects in the academic sector, analyzing their requirements and rendering guidance to the students He is an effective communicator with excellent relationship building and interpersonal skills. He has strong analytical, problem solving and organizational abilities along with possessing a flexible and detail oriented attitude. His doctoral research is on “Disability & Media- Issues of representation, Inclusion and Production” and his other interests include developmental issues connected to the media.

Jenson Joseph joined the Department of Communication as a full time research scholar in 2007. His research activity in the department is in the area of Film Studies – “From subaltern gaze to the middle class/caste. Spectatorial Subjectivity: An analysis of Malayalam Films of the 1950s.” His other research interests reside in South Asian popular culture and the history of media.

Prasheel Anand Banpur joined the Department of Communication as a research scholar in 2011. He has a Master’s degree in Communication from the same university and has about six years of work experience in the industry and academia. He has been Sub Editor for a Hyderabad based web portal, and a Communications Consultant at GE Industrial , Hyderabad. He was also part of the Corporate Communications team at Maytas, Hyderabad. He actively engaged in freelance writing for print and web media, and was part of academic activities as a Lecturer in Mass Communication at St. Mary's College, Hyderabad. His research work in the department centresaround  ‘Organizational Communication in Indian Private Sector Firms’.
